In Memoriam
James E. Barnes

In this special tribute, Smith & Carson celebrate the life of James Edward Barnes, who died on May 11, 2004 at the age of 49.

Jim was a licensed attorney and investigator for more than 20 years. Jim left his legal practice in 1991 to join the firm his father, George, founded in 1966. Jim became President of Barnes & Associates in 1992. In March 2003 Smith & Carson merged with Barnes & Associates. Jim successfully managed the firm’s western region mass tort and litigation support practice and was responsible for client relationships nationwide.

Jim attended UCLA where he received a B.A. in Economics and Political Science. He received his J.D. from Pepperdine University. He was a member of the State Bar of California and served on the board of directors of Public Counsel, the nation’s largest public interest law firm. Jim also served on the board of directors for LAMP, a nonprofit organization providing housing and support services for homeless men and women living with serious mental illness.

Jim was not only a business partner but also a close friend of several years to the employees and clients of Barnes & Associates and Smith & Carson. He contributed significantly to the companies and their growth. He will be missed by all.

Goodbye dear friend.
