Michelle Hetherington completes the Ford Ironman Florida Triathlon.
Atlanta

Michelle Hetherington of Smith & Carson completed the Ford Ironman Florida triathlon on November 3, 2007 in Panama City Beach, Florida in twelve hours and thirty-six minutes. The race started on the beach with a 2.4 mile swim and was followed by a 112 mile bike leg and a 26.2 mile marathon distance run. The race is a qualifier for the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Michelle has previously competed in 70.3 triathlons (1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run), but this was Michelle’s first full distance Ironman triathlon.

According to www.ironman.com, the Ironman race series originated in 1978 after a debate about who is more fit - swimmers, runners or other athletes. Navy Commander John Collins and his wife proposed a race to settle the argument that combined three existing races together: the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 miles), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (112 miles, originally a two-day event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). The first finisher was to be called “the Ironman." Fifteen men participated in the initial event led by the first Ironman, Gordon Halle, with a winning time of 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds. Last year, over 50,000 participants competed to be part of the 2007 Ironman World Championship.

See www.ironmanflorida.com and www.ironman.com for more details. Congratulations Michelle!
